Suki announced Thursday the launch of a new tool that allows clinicians to ask complex clinical questions using Wolters Kluwer’s UpToDate Expert AI API solution directly within the Suki for Clinicians app.
The tool—dubbed Ask—integrates evidence-based clinical reasoning directly into workflows and can provide answers grounded in UpToDate’s proprietary content. It’s the first product integration of the UpToDate Expert AI API, according to the companies.
The content is developed and maintained by more than 7,600 physician authors, editors and peer reviewers, executives say.
Yaw Fellin, Wolters Kluwer Health SVP and general manager of clinical decision support and provider solutions, told Fierce Healthcare clinicians "depend on UpToDate for evidence-based, peer-reviewed clinical intelligence to make clinical decisions."
"Our goal is to make UpToDate available to them where and how they need it, whether they’re coming to UpToDate directly, using it through an AI interface or if it’s embedded more deeply in their workflow," Fellin said. "Our partnership with Suki brings together their power of ambient technology, patient context and UpToDate's clinical intelligence to help drive decision making. It’s an exciting moment for healthcare, and Suki has been a tremendous partner in getting here."
Responses from UpToDate include transparent sourcing, medication and dosing considerations and links to supporting content.
“When we started working with UpToDate’s Expert AI API within Suki, it quickly became clear that clinicians needed more than just general AI-driven responses; they required answers tailored directly to the patient before them,” said Abhi Pathak, Suki chief product officer. “In fact, clinicians selected patient-specific insights 83% of the time across various queries, including diagnoses, dosages, and safety considerations.”
Pathak told Fierce Healthcare standard clinical guidelines are “inherently limited,” adding that clinicians “must still adapt generalized information to fit each patient's unique requirements.”
“Suki Ambient Clinical Intelligence (ACI) bridges this gap effectively by leveraging real-time conversation context alongside the patient's existing chart data,” Pathak said. “Combining this rich context with UpToDate’s trusted evidence transforms clinical reference searches into actionable clinical support.”
Ask is available across Epic, Oracle Health, athenahealth and Meditech electronic health record systems, executives say.
In late August, Suki also rolled out a new AI dictation solution aimed at improving healthcare organizations’ documentation flexibility.
Suki Dictation is natively built inside EHRs from Epic and Meditech and can either be deployed independently or alongside Suki For Clinicians.
