Women's service lines to boom under ACOs

Women's health services could hold significant potential in accountable care organizations (ACOs) via healthcare reform.

"Gender-specific care for women is just now starting to be explored," said Mary Anne Graf, vice president of Women's and Children's Services at Bon Secours Richmond Health System, in a HealthLeaders Media article. "It has significant potential in an ACO environment."

In fact, 55 percent of health systems predict that women's service lines will become more important, according to the article. It is expected that nationwide maternal fetal medicine procedures will grow by 9 percent, pelvic floor disease services by 27 percent, ovarian cancer care by 10 percent, and uterine cancer care by 11 percent.

Although there's certainly potential to expand, the idea of women's service lines isn't new. Hospitals and other providers across the country already are marketing specifically to women, including maternity spa-like services, family-friendly private rooms, or all-female physicians. The women's service lines through ACOs, however, could be the extra push to provide gender-specific care as well as an opportunity to grow in this healthcare market.
