A study published in the Journal of Public Health Management & Practice found that veterans are more likely to delay seeking healthcare. The team, led by Doohee Lee, Ph.D., of Marshall University, South Charleston, West Virginia, and Charles Begley, Ph.D., of the University of Texas School of Public Health, Houston, found that between 2010 and 2011 17 percent of people across the country delayed needed healthcare compared to 29 percent of veterans who put off needed care. The study also pointed to a link between the cover up of care delays in the Department of Veterans Affairs health system and those surveyed, naming those concerns as a potential factor "which may be creating disparities in the effectiveness of care for this vulnerable and deserving population," the team wrote.
