Doctors and trainees do not address overweight/obesity in more than 9 in 10 hospitalized children, according to a new study published in the Journal of Pediatrics. Researchers, led by Marta King, M.D., of Saint Louis University School of Medicine, analyzed a population of 300 hospitalized overweight children between the ages of 2 and 18, examining admission, progress and discharge records. Physicians and physician trainees identified the condition in only 8.3 percent of patients and addressed it for only 4 percent. This represents a missed opportunity to implement interventions, such as weight counseling, outpatient referrals and inpatient consultations, said King. Study abstract
