Premier Healthcare Alliance Recognized for 10 Years of Environmental Excellence

Only organization to win the "Champion for Change" award from Practice Greenhealth for 10 consecutive years

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Premier healthcare alliance has been recognized with the 2012 "Champion for Change" award from Practice Greenhealth. Premier is the only company to receive this distinction for 10 consecutive years.

“This award demonstrates Premier’s commitment to its members and the healthcare community to protect public health and preserve the environment,” said Laura Wenger, RN, executive director, Practice Greenhealth. “Premier is truly demonstrating leadership for the future of healthcare.”

Premier won the Champion for Change award for its collaboration with alliance members to promote sustainable healthcare practices. The national award recognizes organizations that demonstrate success in “greening” their organization and helping their health system members improve environmental performance.

More than 120 Premier members were also recognized by Practice Greenhealth for their efforts to support the environment. View list here.

“We’re proud of our members for implementing green business choices by using safer products that also help reduce waste in the industry,” said Susan DeVore, Premier president and CEO. “We are mutually committed to making these changes that improve community health and lower expenses while having a positive impact on the environment.”

Practice Greenhealth is a national membership organization for healthcare facilities that supports environmentally responsible operations. Its annual Environmental Excellence Awards celebration, which was held on May 2 in Denver in conjunction with CleanMed, honors outstanding green achievements in the healthcare sector.

Premier is committed to a clean environment and protecting community health, evidenced by its GreenHealthy® environmental leadership program, led by the Premier Safety Institute®.

“Premier continues to work with alliance members to identify environmentally preferable products and services that help reduce the healthcare industry’s carbon footprint,” said Gina Pugliese, R.N., M.S., vice president of the Premier Safety Institute. “Our shared goal is to create a safer environment for our patients, staff and communities.”

Premier operates its corporate headquarters in a LEED certified building; and last year it recycled nearly 150,000 pounds of paper on top of 2 tons of computers and electronic equipment.

Premier also advocates on behalf of its members for healthcare policies that address safe and less toxic practices, including the need for Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) labeling of products and more oversight of industrial chemicals with increased disclosure and promotion of safer alternatives.
