S3 Group Joins Industry Leadership Group for UK’s 3 Million Lives Program

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- S3 Group, a global enabler of large scale chronic disease management programs, today announced their participation on the Industry Leadership Group of the 3millionlives program with the Department of Health for England. 3millionlives is a partnership program between Industry partners, the Department of Health (DH), the NHS, Social Care, Housing and patient and service-user representatives. In the NHS 2012 Operating Framework, the NHS Chief Executive identified Telehealth and Telecare as High Impact Innovations that if applied at scale across the NHS could have positive clinical and economics benefits. S3 Group will join other commercial companies on the Leadership Group of the Industry section of 3millionlives and will provide business and technology telehealth domain expertise.

Telehealth and telecare are technologies that assist patients and clinicians to cope with the growing burden that long term conditions place on their lives and on the resources of health and social care agencies. There are some 17 million people with diagnosed long term conditions in the UK with some 15 million in England alone. Conditions like diabetes, heart failure and COPD already consume the majority of healthcare resources with the DH estimating that Chronic Disease consumes 60% of primary care visits, 72% of in-patient admissions, and 65% of outpatient cases. Together these diseases consume 69% of the total health and social care resources and the High Impact Innovations will attempt to address this. Whole System Demonstrator pilots were established to assess the system level impact of Telehealth and Telecare Remote Patient Monitoring solutions in the UK NHS. They were set-up under the full rigors of a Randomised Control Trial (RTC) to give the medical community the evidence base they all sought to fully understand the clinical role home assistive technologies can have on slowing the progression of chronic disease.

Commenting on the background to today’s announcement, Mr. Jim O’Donoghue, VP Telehealth, S3 Group said, “The RTC took 3 years and it cost £30 million to run with £3 million to analyze the data. The headline results published are impressive. The reduction in hospital admissions, bed days and cost savings confirm the results from previous studies. But what is note-worthy about these results is the observed 45% reduction in patient mortality. S3 Group understands the Business, Clinical and Technical aspects of large scale Telehealth Systems and Services through our experiences in similar large scale services in the UK and Italy. Bringing our experience to 3millionlives we believe will be invaluable and will accelerate the programme.”

On the back of these results Prime Minister Cameron has launched an initiative to make assistive technologies available to 3 million patients in the next 5 years. The announcement today commits S3 Group to helping the NHS and Department of Health to achieve this goal.
